Today our first service project was at Changing Footprints. It is a place where shoes and socks get donated for homeless people in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. It was an overall fun day and the man who runs the ministry, Scott, told us a bunch of facts about where all the shoes go and how they help.

Our afternoon service project was at the Ronald McDonald House. We started with a tour of the building and learned about their mission of helping the most needy people. We were shown their storage area, living and common areas, and started working in the storage room. This is where they keep items for families to use while they are staying at Ronald McDonald House. Some people worked on counting thousands of items for inventory while others cleared out expired items.

On the bittersweet last day of service, we went to 2 sites — Changing Footprints and the Ronald McDonald House. At Changing Footprints, we met Scott, a kind older gentleman. We helped him and some volunteers by sorting hundreds of shoes from their give away, from a few days ago, back into their respective bin. At the Ronald McDonald House we got a tour from Patti, who’s worked there for 8 years after volunteering for several years before that. We helped her and the House by reorganizing and taking count of many us of the items in the storage room. Another group searched for expired cleaning products and disposed of them. In the Afternoon, we explored the town of Franklin Indiana — a small historic town just 25 minutes south of the city. The whole group got ice cream together at Millie’s and looked around a candy shop in an old train museum. After that we got dinner at the First Presbyterian Church, which was a stop of the Underground Railroad. Once we returned to Faith Community, we entered the Gathering. The students had the option to get their feet washed as Jesus did to his disciples and many accepted. It was an incredible way to end the week.
