This Week at JMPC 4.30.2020

Arnold Schwarzenegger started his acting career in the movie “Conan the Barbarian”. This movie was based on a comic book series that demanded a big, muscular guy to play Conan. Hence, Arnold Schwarzenegger. There was one scene that came to mind when I read this week’s scripture. Conan is about to have a fight to the death with a whole bunch of bad guys when he decides to pray to his god, Crom, for the first time. Conan: Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That’s what’s important! Valor pleases you, Crom… so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then the [HECK] with you! Conan’s prayer is simple. Give me what I want and if you don’t, I reject you. This is an interesting prayer. It is a test. If Crom gives Conan revenge, Conan will follow Crom. If not, to heck with Crom. Is this kind of like the devil and Jesus? The devil says, “If you are the son of God, do this, and I will reward you.” Is this what we do when we take risks and then ask God to protect us? “Protect me God no matter what I do and I will follow you?” Pastor Jeff will explore this on Sunday, May 3 at 9:30 on Facebook Live (and later recorded on the JMPC Facebook page and YouTube) when he preaches How does God want us to gather?” based on Luke 4: 1-13.
