Lenten Devotion 8 March 5, 2020

Amos 5:21-24
21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!
When I served a Presbyterian Church in Texas, we had partnerships with many other churches, some of whom were “mega churches”. The one thing that stuck out to me when we went to worship there was that the service felt more like a concert. They would have a band on stage with others singing and waving their arms up and down. The lights would change and move up and down with the music. While many people seem to enjoy it, I felt like it was more of a production than a worship service.
God has made it known to us that he despises fake worship. While I won’t personally call those churches fake worship, I will say that it felt like more of a show, or performance. What God wants from us is true and authentic worship. It is not the how many people are in the church or how loud the music is in church. The most important thing is that we worship God with full and open hearts. It is not our traditions that matter most, but our love for God! Amen.
