Lenten Devotion 9 March 6, 2020

Amos 6: 3-8
3 O you that put far away the evil day,
and bring near a reign of violence?
4 Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory,
and lounge on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock,
and calves from the stall;
5 who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp,
and like David improvise on instruments of music;
6 who drink wine from bowls,
and anoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
7 Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile,
and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away.
8 The Lord GOD has sworn by himself
(says the LORD, the God of hosts):
I abhor the pride of Jacob
and hate his strongholds;
and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.
In Amos 6 the prophet tells the ruling class of Israel that all is not lost. Changing from not caring for the poor and oppressed to caring for them will encourage God’s grace and provision for Israel.
But … if there is no repentance. Here is what you can expect, Israel. That is what Amos tells the ruling class of Israel. They are laying on their couches and eating the best food. They sing idle songs and drink wine. They anoint themselves with the latest skin creams and care not for the direction their country is headed. These are the people who will be lost first when the times change. Can you imagine a politician in the US in 2020 saying something like that? Not likely to get elected! But do we need to hear and heed? Are we ignoring our neighbors while we lounge? Are we being inattentive to what God seeks from us? Will we be the first to suffer when the times change? How might we change? Worth thinking about.
