Lenten Devotion 11 3.9.2020

Amos 9: 11-15
11 On that day I will raise up
the booth of David that is fallen,
and repair its breaches,
and raise up its ruins,
and rebuild it as in the days of old;
12 in order that they may possess the remnant of Edom
and all the nations who are called by my name,
says the LORD who does this.
13 The time is surely coming, says the LORD,
when the one who ploughs shall overtake the one who reaps,
and the treader of grapes the one who sows the seed;
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall flow with it.
14 I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will plant them upon their land,
and they shall never again be plucked up
out of the land that I have given them, says the LORD your God.
A few months ago, my daughter and I decided to build a “Coffee Table” for her apartment. We went and bought all the materials we needed. She had drawings that described how to build the table. We “measured twice and cut once”. But there were a couple false starts as we could not get some parts to match up with others. The table did not match the plans. It was unstable. It was not going to succeed. So, on each occasion, we just took it all apart, down to the individual pieces, and started over. That is kind of what Amos says God will be doing with Israel.
Israel is not turning out the way God wanted it to. The rich are ignoring the poor at best and taking advantage of the poor at worst. Israel is ignoring God’s plans. It is unstable. It will not succeed. So, God is taking Israel apart, down to the individual pieces. Then, God will rebuild. Israel will be like it was in David’s day when Israel was a world power led by a king after God’s own heart. This is a hopeful passage. God will not fail. If we fail God, God will start over; and keep starting over until we are as God would have us be. Jesus is what that looks like. The final product pleasing to God … who makes us look like the final product, too.
