Lenten Devotion 2 February 27, 2020

Hosea 4:3
Because of this the land dries up, and all who live in it waste away;
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea are swept away.

One of the most difficult things about Army training is that you are trained as a unit, you are only as strong as your weakest person. We are judged by the weakest person in our squad, platoon, or company. If they fail, we all fail. This was obvious to us as early as the first day. Someone in our platoon didn’t roll 1 of their shirts to exactly 3 inches. The drill instructors threw all of our clothes on the floor and made us sing while doing pushups. It was really unfair, I didn’t mess up, why should I pay the price. Well the reality is that we were all in this together.
We don’t always see our faith in the same way, in fact it would probably scare us if we did. What if God was not just judging me, but our whole nation together? In the Old testament this is exactly what we would see happen, and it was usually because of 2 things, idolatry and immorality, usually treating the poor terribly. God would judge them, and everyone would have to deal with the punishment, as we see in our scripture. SO, let me ask you, what if God judged the United States as a whole, and judged us on idolatry and how we treated the poor? How would that idea change how we lived? How would that thought change how we worship?
