Lenten Devotion 36 4.7.2020

Philippians 3:17
17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.
My father told me when he was younger that he worked in a supermarket loading watermelons. I’m not sure why he always tells me this story, but he tells it a lot. Because of this experience 6 decades ago, he says he can pick the perfect watermelon every time. If you go to the store with him, he walks over to the watermelons and inspects them. Then he picks one up and places it next to his ear and knocks on it. He will continue to do this until he is satisfied with the noise. I will say this, he really does pick the perfect watermelon every time.
I tell this story for 2 reasons, the first is never forget no matter how old you are, you can still embarrass your kids. The second point is more important, that is if you know you are right then don’t worry if people think its weird. Honestly, much of the Christian life is odd to others. It requires loving God and loving your neighbor, truly caring for others. I hope that you are caring for people in ways that make you look crazy, like an older man smacking watermelons in Giant Eagle.
