This Week at John McMillan Presbyterian Church

When my son was a baby, my wife and I both worked. Our son was enrolled at a day care center downtown. The day care center was located at Point Park College and was staffed by students in its early childhood development program. Our son had two principal caregivers; Mary and Sherry. They were wonderful. They were motivated and well prepared. Our son was very happy, and so were we. One day my wife and I were talking about how hard it was to find babysitters. It was then that we found out the caregivers at the day care center supplemented their income by babysitting. We asked Mary and Sherry if they were interested and both said they were surprised it took us so long to ask them. We were thrilled! We were going to have the women who cared for our son every weekday from 9 to 6! How could it be better than that? We had the ability to go out knowing that our son was going to be well cared for by someone we trusted and who was more than capable of doing so. It was a great relief and allowed us to relax and be at peace, even if it was for just a couple of hours. The only request we had was something like this: “This is our son. Take good care of him until we return.” Jesus did something like that. He had eleven disciples that he was about to leave. And he was not coming back any time soon. He was headed back to God by way of the cross, tomb, resurrection and ascension. And like any good “father”, he wanted to make sure his “kids” were taken care of after he was gone. So he asked one who he trusted to take care of them. Someone who was well suited and prepared and motivated to protect them. He asked God. The request went something like this: “These are my people. Take good care of them until I return.” That is what we see in our scripture reading this week and what Pastor Jeff will talk about Sunday at John McMillan Presbyterian Church, May 13 at 8:30 and 11 when he preaches “Living In The Real World” based on John 17: 6-23. Come and hear some good news about the one who cares for us.
